New Tesla Cybertruck deliveries begin: Carwow gets hands-on with with electric pickup

It’s finally here, the new Tesla Cybertruck is now road ready and the first customers are getting their cars. Carwow went along to the delivery event at Tesla’s gigafactory in Texas to get up close and personal with this new EV.

  • New Tesla Cybertruck deliveries begin
  • Prices start from £66,000
  • Cheaper rear-wheel drive version coming in 2025
  • Tesla not taking orders for Cybertruck in UK & EU (yet)
  • Up to 845hp and 13,960Nm of torque
  • 340 miles of claimed range
  • Design stays true to concept

It’s been four years since Elon Musk first pulled the covers off the Cybertruck concept, and now it’s finally here. A handful of lucky customers will take delivery of their cars this week, while the majority will have to wait until 2024.

You can choose between a dual-motor version with 600hp, or the Cyberbeast with three motors and 845hp. Bad news for those of us in the UK though, you can’t order a Cybertruck on our shores – yet.

New Tesla Cybertruck price and specs

The new Tesla Cybertruck currently starts from $79,990 (£66,000) for a dual-motor car with all-wheel-drive, rising to $99,990 (£82,000) if you want the ‘Cyberbeast’ version with three motors and 845hp.

If that seems a bit rich for you, a rear-wheel drive version will be available in 2025 costing $60,990 (£50,000). You do have a hit in terms of range though, with it managing 250 miles on a charge compared to the 340 miles the dual-motor car can do.

If you live in the USA, you can currently put down a $250 deposit (£205) to secure your Cybertruck, and you’ll receive a call when your build slot is available. If you fancy driving this axe head on wheels around your local town in the UK, bad news. The Cybertruck isn’t available to order here, or in Europe, and there’s no word on when, or if, it will be.

New Tesla Cybertruck motors and performance

The current entry point into the Cybertruck range is a dual-motor car with 600hp and 10,000Nm of torque, and no that’s not a typo. That’s enough to launch it from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, almost exactly the same as a basic Porsche 911 Carrera 2.

That gargantuan torque figure also means that this truck can tow a whopping five tonnes, trumping the Ford F150 Lightning’s towing capacity by almost 500kg.

If that somehow seems a bit feeble, you’ll want the appropriately named Cyberbeast model. This gets you a third motor, upping the power to 845hp and 14,000Nm of torque, and it slashes the 0-60mph time to 2.6 seconds. That’s just 0.1 of a second off the V12 Lamborghini Revuelto. The Cyberbeast also has the same five-tonne towing capacity as the standard car.

There will be a cheaper rear-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck in 2025, although exact specs for this car are yet to be confirmed. Tesla has said that it’ll do 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, suggesting it has something in the region of 450hp.

The standard dual-motor Cybertruck has up to 340 miles of range, 20 miles more than the Ford F150 Lightning. If you want to go further than that, you can opt for something called the range extender. This is essentially another huge battery pack which lives in the bed, and it boosts range to over 470 miles.

Go for the tri-motor Cyberbeast and the standard range drops to 320 miles, or over 440 miles if you get the range extender. Both cars can be charged using Tesla’s 250kW superchargers, which can add 128 miles of range in 15 minutes.

New Tesla Cybertruck design

You’re not very likely to mistake the Tesla Cybertruck for any other vehicle on the road right now, because the design stays true to the bonkers concept car of 2019.

It looks as though it was designed using nothing but a ruler, a bit like an axe head on wheels. Almost the entire body is made up of unpainted stainless steel panels, something which should keep production costs down.

The stubby bonnet and full-width light bar are totally unique to the Cybertruck, and the headlights are cleverly hidden in the lower bumper. That massive single windscreen wiper is also pretty unusual, but necessary to clear such a huge windscreen.

The side profile is like no other pickup truck out there, as it looks like a rolling triangle. The bonnet and windscreen follow the same shallow angle up to the roof where it drops off at a sharp angle down to the end of the bed. The wheels have a unique design as well, with the spokes appearing to be moulded into the tyres. All Cybertrucks get 20-inch alloy wheels as standard with plastic aero wheel covers, although the enormity of the tyres makes them seem much smaller than that.

A Cybertruck was also seen at a cars and coffee event in Santa Monica with a stealthy-looking matte black wrap, and this X user doesn’t seem to be a fan. Tesla has recently announced a range of wraps available from dealers for the Model 3 and Model Y. It stands to reason then that the brand could offer this on the bare-metal Cybertruck. This would be much cheaper than painting every vehicle, especially as wrapping these flat panels will be pretty straight forward at a dealer.

New Tesla Cybertruck interior and infotainment

The interior of the new Cybertruck is as you’d expect from a Tesla – it’s very minimalist with the dashboard being dominated by an 18.5-inch screen. There’s no steering yoke like you get in the Model S and Model Y, instead it appears to have a squared-off version of the wheel you get in the new Model 3.

That screen is where you control almost all of the car’s functions, including things like opening the front boot and controlling the glovebox. It’s a good job then that it’s really quick and responsive to your inputs, and it’s pretty easy to whip through the menus.

Those sitting in the back aren’t left out of the tech fest either, as they get a 9.4-inch screen which they can use to watch things like Netflix while stretched out enjoying the generous rear legroom.

Tesla claims the Cybertruck has 2,830 litres of lockable cargo capacity. This includes the load bed (which Tesla calls the vault) the frunk, and even more storage behind the side windows.

The Cybertruck also has integrated 120-volt and 240-volt powerpoints, turning it into a kind of mobile mini power station. It also features an on-board air compressor.
